While you get help

The basics

  • Stay calm.
  • Mind your own safety — a hurting dog may bite.
  • If your dog can't stand, lay them on their right side.
  • Protect from cold (cover) or heat (shade, damp cloths).
  • If they're not biting, keep the nose and mouth clear.
  • Contact the vet.
Safe transport

Getting there in one piece

  • Leash your dog, or use a carrier for puppies and small dogs.
  • For a heavy dog, a blanket works as a stretcher.
  • A dog in pain may snap — a soft muzzle or makeshift loop is okay if needed.
  • Call ahead so they're ready for you.

A note for Frenchie owners

Breathing trouble and overheating are the two biggest ER risks.

If your dog's gums or tongue look bluish or grey, if breathing is labored at rest, or if they've collapsed in the heat — treat it as an emergency and go now. When in doubt, call. You don't have to make that call alone.

Two quick questions to help you decide whether to call right now, get seen today, or just keep an eye on things.

Emergency check for your Frenchie

Answer a couple of quick questions. This helps you triage — it does NOT replace a vet exam. If you're worried, calling is always right.

This check is guidance, not a diagnosis. When in doubt, a vet visit is always the right call.
